Messages
On November 19, 2009, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest published its automatic starting list for the 2010 Le Mans 24-hour race. This list was determined from the first and second of the four Le Mans classes in the previous year's race, the American Le Mans Series , the Le Mans Series , the Asian Le Mans Series , the FIA GT Championship and the winners of the Petit Le Mans on Road Atlanta . The winner of the Michelin Green X Challenge also received an automatic message. 29 teams were invited, 21 accepted and planned to take part in the race.
Including these 29 vehicles, the ACO registered 85 reports. On February 4th, the ACO announced the 55 starters for the race. For the first time in the history of the 24-hour race, the teams had to register at least one driver per team as a fixed vehicle. The other pilots per team had to be announced to the organizer by May 12th at the latest.
The teams
LMP1
On February 5, Audi announced the nine drivers who drove the revised Audi R15 TDI at Le Mans. The Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen formed a team with Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello . The second car was driven by Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas , who had already driven the diesel prototype last year . You were joined by Mike Rockenfeller , who in 2009 had formed a team with Lucas Luhr and Alexandre Prémat . The third vehicle was filled with new signings: André Lotterer , seventh overall for Colin Kolles in the Audi R10 TDI in 2009 , formed a driver team with Marcel Fässler from Switzerland and Benoît Tréluyer from France . Tréluyer drove a Peugeot 908 HDi FAP for Henri Pescarolo's team in 2009 and had a serious accident that night, which he survived unharmed.
On February 22nd, Peugeot also announced the remaining drivers and at the same time ended speculation about whether the multiple world rally champion Sébastien Loeb would start again at Le Mans. The task was to replace David Brabham , who was engaged in last year's winning car and drove an Acura ARX-01 in the LMP2 class for Highcroft Racing . Since Loeb did not have enough free test time to get used to the Peugeot 908, it was not used. Instead undertook Peugeot former Honda -Testfahrer and Super Aguri - Formula 1 driver Anthony Davidson . The second team was changed, where to Franck Montagny and Stéphane Sarrazin now Nicolas Minassian came into the car. Sébastien Bourdais , who sat in this car last year, now formed a team with Pedro Lamy and Simon Pagenaud , who were new to the team. Christian Klien was the substitute driver .
The Formula 1 World Champion in 1992 , Nigel Mansell , was in 2010 at the age of 57 years his debut in the 24-hour race. Together with his sons Leo and Greg he drove a Ginetta-Zytek GZ09S. On April 8, the Japanese dome team announced that it was not going to start. As a first reserve, the French Pegasus team came into the starting field with its Norma M200 of the LMP2 class.
LMP2
In 2010 there was no Porsche RS Spyder in the LMP2 class . For the first time, however, Acura took part in the 24-hour race. With Karim Ajlani , a Syrian competed for the second time , driving a Pescarolo 01-Judd for OAK Racing.
GT1
The 2010 GT1 class had eight starters. Luc Alphand continued to trust the Corvette C6.R and brought two vehicles to the start. The return of Ford at the Sarthe was eagerly awaited, where three Ford GT 1s competed in this class.
GT2
Corvette Racing started with the new racing Corvette in the GT2 class. Even BMW announced a comeback in Le Mans. After the ACO had homologated the new BMW M3 GT2, BMW Motorsport fielded two cars. The German racing team had officially confirmed the two works drivers Jörg Müller and Andy Priaulx as pilots. The AF Corse team for the Le Mans Series alongside Toni Vilander and the two former Formula 1 driver Jean Alesi and Giancarlo Fisichella started the race, used two Ferrari. Fisichella made his Le Mans debut, Alesi drove at Le Mans in 1989 .

Reserve vehicles
As in previous years, the ACO published the list of reserve vehicles with the start list. In 2010 there was an innovation. Five teams each were put on the list as LMP or GT vehicles and would replace those teams that could not take part in the race for various reasons. The LMP reservists are only allowed to replace vehicles of the LMP1 and LMP2 classes. The same procedure applied to the GT cars. The advancement took place in the order of nomination.
