Tresana is an Italian municipality with 1934 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Massa-Carrara in the Tuscany region .

Location of Tresana in the province of Massa-Carrara

The community extends over approx. 44 km². It is located about 145 km northwest of the regional capital Florence , about 35 km northwest of Massa and about 30 km northwest of Carrara .

The districts include Barbarasco (main town, lying on the Magra ) , Bocco, Bola, Bottria, Camposopra, Canala, Careggia, Castello, Catizzola, Cavecchia, Ceppino, Cercò, Corneda, Debirotti, Folla, Fontanedo, Giovagallo, Groppo, Lorenzana, Meredo, Novegigola, Ortigaro, Penolo (located on the river of the same name) , Popetto, Quercia, Ricco, Serrapiana, Tassanarla e Nave, Tavella, Tresana (gives the municipality its name) , Vigonzla, Villa Rosticciola and Villecchia.

The neighboring municipalities are Bolano ( SP ), Calice al Cornoviglio (SP), Licciana Nardi , Mulazzo , Podenzana and Villafranca in Lunigiana .

history

The district of Tresana emerged from a fortress of the Longobards . In 1164 this was subordinated to the Malaspina by Emperor Friedrich I. After the Spanish occupation in 1652, the area was placed under the Protectorate of Tuscany in 1660 . After that, the Corsini ruled the community until the occupation of Napoleon . From 1814 to 1859 it was part of the Duchy of Modena . The Kingdom of Sardinia annexed the area in 1859, and with Sardinia the place became part of the province of Tuscany with Italian unification .
