history

The Romans called the place Apua , the current name comes from the words Ponte and tremare (trembling bridge). The center developed around the Castello del Piagnaro . From Sigerich , Archbishop of Canterbury , the place was 990 in his description of the Via Francigena as Puntremel mentioned. At that time the place was a free commune, which was recognized by Friedrich Barbarossa and Friedrich II . The community was then supported by Parma and Piacenza and was in conflict with the Malaspina . The nearby Passo della Cisa mountain pass was considered the gateway to Tuscany .

Location of Pontremoli (1) as the northernmost and most distant exclave of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany from 1815 to 1847

In 1331 the community was sold by John of Luxembourg to Mastino II della Scala . Eight years later the place went to the Visconti from Milan and in 1404 to the Fieschi from Genoa , only to return to the Visconti in 1433. In 1441 the commune was part of the dowry of Bianca Maria Visconti for Francesco Sforza along with Cremona , but was reunited with the rest of the duchy with the succession of Sforza in the Duchy of Milan in 1450. Later changes of ownership in Milan did not affect the affiliation of Pontremoli, so that it was not until 1647 when the Republic of Genoa took over a new important year. In 1650 Pontremoli became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . In 1778, Grand Duke Leopold I granted the place the addition of Città nobile . After the Napoleonic occupation from 1805 to 1814, Pontremoli became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany again. In 1847, in implementation of the Treaty of Florence of November 28, 1844 , Pontremoli and its territory were annexed to the Duchy of Parma , where it remained until the unification of Italy.

From 1797 to 1988 Pontremoli was the seat of a diocese of the same name, which in 1988 was united with the diocese of Massa to form the diocese of Massa Carrara-Pontremoli . The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Popolo has been the co- cathedral of the diocese ever since . The district of Arzelato came to the municipality in 1957, before it belonged to Zeri .
