Porcari is an Italian municipality in the province of Lucca in Tuscany with 8911 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Porcari is about 10 kilometers east of the provincial capital Lucca and 52 km west of the regional capital Florence in the Luccheser Plain in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone D, 1,676 GG.

The municipality includes the districts (fractions) Fratina (19 m), Padule (13 m) and Rughi .

The neighboring communities are Altopascio , Capannori and Montecarlo .

history

Porcari is first mentioned in a Longobard document from 780. The place was on the Via Francigena and the Via Cassia . Porcari had a castle since the 11th century. It served to defend Lucca until the 15th century and was later demolished. Politically, Porcari belonged to Lucca and eventually came to Italy with this area. Porcari has been an independent municipality since 1913, before that it belonged to Capannori .

The paper industry is particularly important in the economy.

  • Chiesa di San Giusto , church that was built on the site of the old church of San Giovanni Battista in the 15th century. Was substantially renewed in 1745 and only completed with the completion of the facade in 1884. Contains a cycle of frescoes by Michele Marcucci from the early 20th century.
  • Chiesa della Natività di Maria , church in the Rughi district. Was built as a house of prayer for the Rughi hospital, which was opened in the 12th and 13th centuries. It was mentioned in the 17th century and was first documented in 1456 as the Oratorio di S. Maria di Rughi . In 1931/33 the church was expanded and restored. Further restorations took place in 1982 and 2015. Contains the panel painting Madonna e il Bambino tra San Girolamo e un Martire by an unknown artist from Lucca from the 16th century.
  • Sacro Cuore di Gesù , church in the Padule district, built in 1912/1913.
  • Fossa Nera , archaeological site. During the excavations in 1987, the remains of a village from the Bronze Age , remains of an Etruscan settlement and Roman buildings were found.

traffic

  • Porcari is on the A 11 motorway that connects Florence with Pisa and Lucca. The place does not have its own junction, the closest are Capannori in the southwest (approx. 3 km from the village) and Altopascio in the southeast (approx. 6 km from the village).
  • The municipality has the Porcari train station (approx. 1 km south of the town center) on the Florence- Viareggio railway line .
