Palestro is a municipality with 1884 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Pavia (PV), Lombardy region .

The neighboring municipalities are Confienza , Pezzana , Prarolo , Robbio , Rosasco , Vinzaglio and Vercelli .

geography

The place is located in the Lomellina region , not far from Novara and Vercelli and is the furthest westward place in Lombardy. The municipality covers an area of ​​18  km² .

history

Battle of Palestro

Palestro was settled successively by the Celts, Etruscans and Romans, but is mentioned for the first time in 999 when it was by Otto III. was given to the Bishop of Vercelli. The place was conveniently located on the Via Francigena and was fortified in the Middle Ages. In the 14th century it came into the possession of the Visconti , then fell to the Borromeo family and came under Spanish rule in 1500. From 1714 Palestro belonged to Austria.

At Vinzaglio and Palestro, at the end of May 1859, during the second Italian War of Independence, there were battles between Piedmontese and French associations on the one hand and Austrian armed forces on the other. The Austrians were forced to withdraw towards Milan . They suffered a heavy defeat in the Battle of Magenta .

Palestro is the birthplace of Natalino Pescarolo , who was Bishop of Cuneo and Fossano until 2005 .

Attractions

  • San Giovanni Battista , baroque church from the 18th century with a campanile from earlier times . The presbytery has a cycle of frescoes depicting the life of John the Baptist .
  • Monumento Ossario , erected in memory of the Battle of Palestro in 1859. The remains of fallen Piedmontese, French and Austrian soldiers are buried there. The monument was built by the Milanese architect Giuseppe Sommaruga .
