Sannazzaro de 'Burgondi is a municipality with 5298 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Pavia in the Italian region of Lombardy .

Location and economy

Sannazzaro de 'Burgondi is located in the completely flat Po plain about 2 kilometers north of the river and 50 kilometers south of Milan . The municipality is known for its cultivation of risotto rice , especially the Carnaroli variety . Economically and ecologically decisive, however, is a large refinery of Eni Spa , immediately west of the community's residential development.

Parish Church of Santi Nazzaro e Celso

The establishment of the settlement, located in Lomellina, an area between Piémont and Lombardy, dates back to pre-Roman times. It was named after the early Christian martyr San Nazzaro. The knights of Sannazzaro de 'Burgondi already enjoyed a high reputation under Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa . Frederick took the nobles of San Nazzaro de Burgondi under his protection, confirmed their allodies and fiefs , appointed them his legates (authorized governors ) in Sardinia and granted them a number of privileges. From 1466 to 1835 the rule was owned by the Malaspina di Sannazzaro .
