history

The first inhabitants of the area around Cairo were the Ligurians . The place originated first as Cairo ( Cajri Veteri Ixolaria , also Cairo Vecchio , today Cairo Lomellino , today a district of Pieve del Cairo) north of the confluence of Tanaro and Po. Today's main town was created by the Pieve a few meters northeast of Cairo. In the possession of the Conti palatini di Lomello, Cairo was taken by Friedrich Barbarossa in 1155 . Pieve del Cairo was first mentioned in 1191. Around 1410 Pieve del Cairo was subordinate to the Beccaria , who ruled until the end of the 16th century, then from 1597 the place was subordinate to the Isimbardi . A special event took place in June 1512 when Giovanni de 'Medici was released from captivity in Pieve del Cairo after the Battle of Ravenna on April 11th.

In 1818 the place Gallia was assigned to the municipality. The current district of Cairo Lomellino was an independent municipality since the unification of Italy in 1861. Until May 12, 1863, the place was called Cairo, then until it was incorporated on January 1, 1891, Cairo Lomellino.
