history
In 906, Adalbert the Rich , Margrave of Ivrea , founded the Abbey of San Pietro, which became one of the most important Benedictine abbeys in northern Italy. Its importance also grew because in 929 the monks of Novalesa Abbey , which had been destroyed by the Saracens , found refuge here for a few decades. The beginning of the 14th century brought about the decline of the monastery due to the appearance of the Visconti . In 1542 the monks moved to Eremo di Sant'Alberto di Butrio in Ponte Nice .
