Lomello is an Italian commune with 2107 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Pavia in the Lombardy region ; it is located about 50 km southwest of Milan and 30 km west of Pavia on the right bank of the Agogna . The place is the center of the Lomellina . Neighboring municipalities to Lomello are: Ferrera Erbognone , Galliavola , Mede , Ottobiano , San Giorgio di Lomellina , Semiana , Velezzo Lomellina , Villa Biscossi
history
In Roman times, one was Mansio Laumellum known she was on the Via Regina , the Roman road that runs along the old road of the Gauls Pavia with Turin association. Excavations have unearthed inscriptions, graves from imperial times, as well as remains of walls and a gate.
At the time of the Lombards Lomello acquired a certain prosperity. It was here that Theudelinde , Authari's widow , met Agilulf , Duke of Turin, in 590 . Her daughter Gundeperga , the wife of King Arioald , was imprisoned in a tower for three years on charges of cheating on her husband, until a divine verdict gave her her freedom.
During the Carolingian era , Lomello was the seat of a Comes , in 1024 the place became the residence of a Count Palatine . At the same time, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was built as a symbol of power and prosperity. From 1360 Lomello belonged to the sphere of influence of the Visconti , later to that of the Sforza . Francesco Sforza transferred the territory to the Crivelli family , who ruled here until 1760.
