Giuseppe Sommaruga

Giuseppe Sommaruga (born July 11, 1867 in Milan ; † March 27, 1917 ) was an Italian architect who worked mainly in Northern Italy and in Milan. Sommaruga is one of the main exponents of the Liberty style, an Italian variant of Art Deco .

life and work

Ossario in Palestro , Province of Pavia

Sommaruga studied architecture with Camillo Boito at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. He built villas, palaces and mausoleums. For the 1906 World's Fair in Milan, he planned the Gardini della piazza d'Armi and the large fountain in the garden.

While his Liberty-style villas and palaces are characterized by an abundance of floral and playful décor, the Casa Broggi in Milan, which he designed in cooperation with Luigi Broggi (1851–1926), is still partly French-style classicism committed to a househusband . One of his early works is the Ossario di Palestro in the province of Pavia , built in 1892/93, a memorial and mausoleum for those who died in the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859 . His main works are the Palazzo Castiglioni in Milan, the Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori in Varese, the Villa Faccanoni in Sarnico and the mausoleums of the Faccanoni and Casnati families.

Sommaruga was married to Adelina Volonteri, the couple had a daughter.

Sommaruga was an honorary member of the Accademia de Brera , a member of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano , President of the Lombard Chamber of Architects ( Associazione degli Architetti Lombardi ) and first President of the Federazione Nazionale degli Architetti Italiani .
