Sarnico is an Italian commune in the province of Bergamo in the Lombardy region .
geography
Sarnico is located on the south bank of Lake Iseo , where the Oglio River leaves the lake and borders the municipalities of Adrara San Martino , Iseo , Paratico , Predore , Viadanica and Villongo .
Population development
Attractions
Sarnico owns a number of villas and buildings designed in the Liberty style by the Milanese architect Giuseppe Sommaruga . The building was commissioned by the Faccanoni family . These include u. a. the Villa Luigi Faccanoni, the Villa Pietro Faccanoni, the Villa Giuseppe Faccanoni and the family mausoleum .
- Villa Giuseppe Faccanoni , built in 1907 in Liberty style by Giuseppe Sommaruga. The villa with a representative staircase is located within a spacious park area directly on the lake, is privately owned and cannot be visited.
- Mausoleo Faccanoni : Monumental mausoleum for the Faccanoni family inside the Sarnico cemetery, built in 1907 by Giuseppe Sommaruga. Sommaruga used only material from local quarries for the building, which was decorated with staircases, elaborate Liberty grids made of iron and bronze, putti and antique ornaments.
- Church of San Martino : The baroque church goes back to a medieval predecessor and was rebuilt in the first decades of the 16th century. In 1727 the building was demolished and rebuilt in a representative style in the Roman Baroque to provide space for the growing parish. The chief architect was the builder Luca Lucchini from Ticino. The lower storey of the campanile, made of roughly hewn field stones, dates back to 1592, and the tower was raised in 1869.
- Pestkapelle ( Cappella dei Mortini ): The small votive chapel was built in 1633 in memory of the plague epidemic of 1630 while the deceased who were buried here. The chapel is decorated with well-preserved (restored) frescoes. Shown are u. a. the two saints of the plague, Sebastian and Rochus . In 1787 the chapel was renovated after a smallpox outbreak in the community, but later closed again and used as a storage room. In 1836, after an outbreak of cholera in the community, it was renovated again and used again for sacred purposes.
