Ranica is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 5966 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy . The municipality is part of the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo and is located about five kilometers northeast of the provincial capital Bergamo . The place lies within the Val Seriana .

The place is first mentioned in a document in 881 as Andrei de Larianica . The name probably comes from the name villa Hilarianica . Presumably the goods of Hilary were situated here.
