history

Since the middle of the 13th century there is evidence of a community to which Carona, Fondra (later Isola di Fondra) and Trabuchello (now part of Isola di Fondra) belonged, and which had its seat in Branzi. This is also documented in the Bergamo statutes from 1331 and 1422. In 1595 the places Branzi, Carona and Fondra became independent parishes, each forming a parish. Two sindaci (mayors) each took care of the interests of the places, a consul ( console ) headed the overall administration of Valfondra. At the time there were 1410 inhabitants in 258 households ( fuochi ) in the three centers . The community ran a wine bar with moderate prices, there was also a public oven and two blacksmiths. Four mills and two sawmills operated on the Brembo River . Since the first half of the 17th century there is a municipal council that elected two mayors and a chamberlain to head the municipal administration. At the end of the 18th century, Branzi had 330 inhabitants. From 1797 to 1804 Branzi and Carona were reunited to form one community. In 1805 the population of Branzi was 300, in 1809 519. In 1810 Carona, Fondra and Trabuchello were united with Branzi, the Lombard-Venetian kingdom initially brought no change, in 1871 Monaci and Cagnoli were added. In 1853 the community had 707 inhabitants. When the Lombard provinces joined the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1859, Carona and Fondra became independent again. In the 1861 census after the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy , Branzi counted 767 inhabitants. After a temporary decline, the town reached its highest population of 1,120 in 1921, which fell to 832 by 1936. In 1951 there were 1,051 inhabitants, after which the number of inhabitants decreased continuously.

economy

The place has a long tradition of cheese making. The Formaggio Branzi was sold to dealers from Bergamo and Brescia on September 21, which lasted three days . From this fat cheese, which was made on the high pastures and then matured in the valley for 40 to 50 days, around 10,000 forms were sold at the fair in the middle of the 19th century. Originally only produced in summer, this specialty is now available all year round.
