Caravaggio is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 16,297 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Bergamo , Lombardy .

Caravaggio is located 24 km south of the provincial capital Bergamo , 39 km east of Milan and 52 km west of Brescia . The community has an area of ​​around 32 km². The height is given as 111  m slm .

history

The first written mention of Caravaggio (as Caravagio ) comes from the year 962. In the 14th and 15th centuries the village was occupied alternately by the troops of the states of Venice and Milan . The Basilica of Santa Maria del Fonte outside the city is a major pilgrimage destination.

The community is known as the place of origin of the family of the painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (* 1571).
