Casirate d'Adda is an Italian commune in the province of Bergamo in the Lombardy region with 4121 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

Casirate d'Adda is located 27 km southwest of the provincial capital Bergamo and 41 km east of the center of the metropolis of Milan. The place is about 4 km east of the Adda river in the Po Valley. The neighboring municipalities are Arzago d'Adda , Calvenzano , Cassano d'Adda ( MI ), Rivolta d'Adda ( CR ) and Treviglio . The old town center is recognizable on a stepped terrain that formed the shore of Lake Gerundio, a floodplain of the Adda. The lake was already drained in Lombard times.

history

Although it can be concluded from the history of northern Italy in antiquity that the area on the lower course of the Adda was already used for agriculture in Roman times, there are no testimonies or finds that point to the site of today's Casirate d'Adda. The place is mentioned for the first time as "Caseriate" in a Longobard testament from the year 774, in which Taido, councilor of King Desiderius , bequeathed goods to the church. This shows that there was already a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Casirate at that time. Casirate belonged to the Duchy of Treviglio until 1186, when Emperor Barbarossa struck the feudum of Milan. Casirate then shared the fate of the Duchy of Milan for centuries. The Napoleonic occupation drew new administrative boundaries, Casirate came to the newly created Département de l'Adda , the capital of which was Bergamo. Only the names changed, today Casirate belongs to the province of Bergamo.

In 1974 the Italian oil company ENI carried out test wells , which struck oil, but the deposit was too small for development and exploitation to be worthwhile.
