history
With the Peace of Constance in 1183, Milan became a duchy, which also ruled the surrounding area. In 1450 Milan fell to the Sforza family . After Charles V's victory over Francis I in 1525 , Milan fell to the Spanish Habsburgs . In 1714, in the Peace of Rastatt, Lombardy with its capital Milan was then assigned to the Austrian Habsburgs. These divided the Duchy of Milan into eight provinces in 1786, including the province of Milan. Under the Napoleonic rule was the Cisalpine Republic , the Italian Republic and the Kingdom of Italy from 1797 to 1815 that after the river Olona named department Olona , in addition to Pavia times also Como and Varese included. In the Habsburg Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto , the province of Milan was re -established in 1816. After the annexation of Lombardy by the Kingdom of Sardinia- Piedmont ( Risorgimento ), the province of Milan became a territorial body of Sardinia-Piedmont on the basis of an administrative reform law of October 23, 1859 and then of Italy from March 17, 1861. The province of Milan was enlarged by Abbiategrasso , Magenta and Lodi and thus covered almost 3,000 km². The first provincial council elections took place on January 15, 1860. By 1927 the province was divided into the five districts (circondari) Milan , Lodi , Monza , Gallarate and Abbiategrasso with 39 districts (mandamenti) and 498 municipalities. After the district level was omitted in 1923, the districts were also abolished in 1927 and a number of new provinces were formed in return. As part of this reform, the province of Milan lost 37 municipalities to the new province of Varese . In 1992 the Province of Lodi was spun off from the Province of Milan , and in 2004 the Province of Monza and Brianza . In 2010 the Province of Milan celebrated its 150th anniversary as a self-governing body. On January 1, 2015, the province became the metropolitan city of Milan.
economy
The metropolitan city of Milan is the economically most important center of Italy. More than half of the 200 largest companies in the country are based here. Most of the country's publishers, advertising agencies, market research institutes and trading companies are located here. In 1910, the car manufacturer Alfa Romeo was founded in Milan (today part of the Fiat group). Another world-famous company is the tire and cable manufacturer Pirelli.
