history
Lodi was founded as a village called Alauda (" skylark ") by the Boians . Later the village became a Roman Municipium and was named Laus Pompeia after Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo .
The city had been the seat of a bishopric since the 4th century , but the early days of the diocese until the 9th century are completely in the dark. According to legend, the Roman legionaries Felix of Africa and Nabor are said to have suffered martyrdom by beheading in Lodi as Christians around 304.
It gained importance under the late Ottonian emperors at the end of the 10th century. Due to the associated boom in trade, Lodi came into conflict with Milan . After several wars, Lodi was destroyed by Milanese troops and in 1158 about 7 km from the old settlement core (today as Lodi Vecchio - old Lodi - an independent municipality) was founded and fortified with the help of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa . A peace agreement with Milan was not reached until 1198, from which both cities also benefited economically.
The 13th century was marked by social unrest and party struggles between Ghibellines and Guelphs , in which Milan intervened several times. During the first half of the 14th century, the Visconti family gained power in the city. Lodi remained part of the territory of Milan . In 1454 a peace treaty between Milan and Venice was signed here . The Peace of Lodi was significant as it ensured peace in the region for several decades.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father stayed in Lodi on the evening of March 15, 1770 on the return journey from Milan via Bologna to Salzburg. That evening, the 14-year-old wrote his 1st string quartet KV 80, which is nicknamed "Lodi", in a pub.
The Battle of Lodi between French and Austrian troops took place near the city on May 10, 1796 during the First Coalition War .
In 1859 the Province of Lodi was dissolved and the city was subordinated to the Province of Milan .
In 1992 the area around Lodi was separated from the province of Milan and the province of Lodi was created.
Lodi has been a bishopric ( diocese of Lodi ) since the earliest times . Pope Benedict XVI appointed the new bishop . on November 14, 2005 the previous auxiliary bishop from the Archdiocese of Milan , Giuseppe Merisi , who had previously been titular bishop of Drusiliana .
