Codogno is a town with 15,994 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lodi in the Italian region of Lombardy . It is located 58 km southeast of Milan , 25 km southeast of Lodi and 15 km north of Piacenza .

geography

Codogno is the center of the Basso Lodigiano , the fertile plain between the Lower Adda and the Po . The municipality includes the villages of Maiocca and Triulza.

The neighboring municipalities are Castelgerundo , Casalpusterlengo , Fombio , Maleo , San Fiorano , Somaglia and Terranova dei Passerini .

The ancient course of the Via Emilia is preserved in the course of the Via Roma and the Via Vittorio Emanuele. The modern state road 9 leads west of the city past Lodi to Milan. The next motorway exit is Piacenza Nord on the A1 Autostrada del Sole .

Codogno train station is a hub with connections to Piacenza, Cremona , Pavia and Milan.

history

Codogno was founded in the 3rd century BC. Founded with the formation of the Roman province Gallia cisalpina . The place probably goes back to a pre-Roman Celtic settlement. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Bishops of Lodi. In 1965 Codogno received town charter.

In 2020, it was identified as the center of the COVID-19 pandemic in northern Italy and declared a red zone with Castiglione d'Adda , Casalpusterlengo, Fombio, Maleo, Somaglia, Bertonico , Terranova dei Passerini, Castelgerundo and San Fiorano.

Emanuele Dossena ( PdL ) was elected mayor in May 2006. His center-right alliance also has the majority in the municipal council with 13 out of 20 seats.
