Ulrich Bremi (born November 6, 1929 in Zurich ; † June 17, 2021 ) was a Swiss entrepreneur and politician ( FDP ). He was President of the National Council in 1990/91 .

biography

After training at the metalworking school in Winterthur and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , Ulrich Bremi gained his first professional experience at Firestone AG in Pratteln from 1955 to 1961 . From 1962 to 1990 he headed the Bauer Kaba Group , from 1968 as a delegate of the board of directors . From 1990 to 1998 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Georg Fischer AG in Schaffhausen and from 1992 to 2000 of the Swiss Reinsurance Company in Zurich. From 1991 to 2000 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors ofAirport real estate company in Kloten and from 1988 to 1999 Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ). From 2005 to 2008 he was President of the ETH Zurich Foundation . He was a member of the board of directors of other large companies, including the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt , the CS Group and Elektrowatt . He last served in the Swiss Army as a lieutenant colonel .

Bremi lived in Zollikon . He was married to Anja Bremi-Forrer (* 1935) from 1964 until her death in 2018. The marriage resulted in two daughters.

politics

From 1963 to 1975 Bremi was a member of the Zurich Cantonal Council , from 1969 to 1973 as President of the FDP parliamentary group. In the 1973/74 term of office he was President of the Cantonal Council.

In the Swiss parliamentary elections in 1975 Bremi was elected to the National Council, where he was President of the Free Democratic Group in the Federal Assembly from 1986 to 1989 . During his last year in office, 1990/91, he was President of the National Council .

For the NZZ, Bremi embodied the “old Zurich economic freedom”, the close connection between entrepreneurship and the long-standing political FDP, which is characteristic of the canton, as well as the Swiss militia system . He represented economically liberal but not libertarian positions.
