life and work
Angelo Pietrasanta was born as the second son of Luigi Pietrasanta and Margherita Gelmini into a well-off, art-loving family. His uncle Luigi Bisi was a professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan . From 1850 Pietrasanta studied at the Accademia di Brera as a student of Francesco Hayez . In 1858 he won the Oggioni competition with a tempera painting of the miraculous multiplication of bread on paper. In addition to a gold medal, he received exemption from military service and a scholarship that enabled him to travel to Florence and Rome . In Florence, where he was probably staying before receiving the scholarship, he copied the frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli in the Palazzo Medici Riccardi and studied the works of Beato Angelico , Domenico Ghirlandaio , Masaccio and Tizian . He made friends with many colleagues who frequented the Caffè Michelangiolo , including Telemaco Signorini . In 1860/61 he lived in Rome, where he shared accommodation with the sculptor Odoardo Tabacchi . Then he settled back in Milan. In 1863 he was made an honorary member of the Accademia di Brera.
Pietrasanta painted in particular portraits, genre , history and landscape pictures as well as frescoes. His most famous painting, Gli Orti Rucellai (The Rucellai Gardens), was exhibited at the Accademia di Brera in 1864 and purchased by Victor Emmanuel II for the Royal Palace in Milan, where it is still today. In 1868 he was involved in the decoration of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II under the direction of Eleuterio Pagliano , he painted the personifications of Europe and science. Due to their poor condition, the frescoes were replaced by mosaics in 1911 based on the original cardboard boxes .
Pietrasanta died of nephritis on June 4, 1876 at the age of 41 while he was preparing the painting of the Beata Vergine Incoronata church in Lodi. He was buried on the Cimitero Monumentale in Milan, the bust on his tomb was created by Odoardo Tabacchi .
