Eleuterio Pagliano (born May 2, 1826 in Casale Monferrato , † January 5, 1903 in Milan ) was an Italian painter , etcher and lithographer .

Life

Pagliano studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan a . a. with the history painters Luigi Sabatelli and Giuseppe Sogni . On the occasion of the March Revolution in Northern Italy, which then attacked the Austrian Empire in 1848 , Pagliano joined the Bersaglieri as a volunteer under Menara's leadership. Under his command, Pagliano took part in the siege of Rome and did not return to art until 1851.

In 1858/59 Pagliano created a depiction of St. Louis for King Charles Albert I of Sardinia-Piedmont . This painting was awarded a gold medal by the Milan Academy. Pagliano was unable to carry out any further commissions because the war of 1859 once again made any artistic activity impossible.

After the end of the war, Pagliano addressed this war in several pictures and also incorporated his own experiences. One of the better known paintings from this period is " The Capture of the Cemetery of Magenta ".

With his last pictures Pagliano came a little closer to the sketchy manner of the naturalists , but nevertheless remained strongly attached to his traditional painting style. Among other things, he was a corresponding member of the Berlin Art Academy .

The painter Eleuterio Pagliano died on January 5, 1903 in Milan at the age of almost 77.
