Sesto Calende is a municipality in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .
geography
The municipality lies at the outflow of Lake Maggiore at its southern end, the Ticino , and already on the northern edge of the Po Valley and covers an area of 23 km² . The factions Abbazia, San Giorgio, Lentate, Oriano, Lisanza, Coquo, Mulini and Sant'Anna belong to Sesto Calende. The neighboring municipalities are Angera , Cadrezzate , Castelletto sopra Ticino ( NO ), Comabbio , Dormelletto ( NO ), Golasecca , Mercallo , Osmate , Taino and Vergiate .
At Sesto Calende there is a protected meadow landscape.
history
Sesto Calende went through Via Severiana Augusta, a Roman consular road that connected Milan to Verbano . Here this road was divided into its two terminal directions: the first reached Angera , while the other led to Domodossola . The community already belonged to the Contado del Seprio as the seat of the sculdascio , and then to the Pieve di Angera; this also included the village of Cocquo.
