Cesare da Sesto (* 1477 in Sesto Calende ; † 1523 in Milan ) was an Italian high Renaissance painter from the school of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519).

Life

Cesare was born in Sesto Calende, in what is now the province of Varese , Lombardy . As an artist he was mainly influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, but also by Bernardino Luini (1480–1532) and Marco d'Oggiono (1475–1530). It is possible that around 1505 he was one of the collaborators of Raphael (1483–1520) and Baldassare Peruzzi (1481–1536) in Rome . A lunette in Sant'Onofrio and some paintings in Campagnano di Roma are ascribed to him from this period .

From 1514 he worked in Naples . In 1515 he completed a monumental winged altar for the Abbey of Santissima Trinità in Cava de 'Tirreni . Back in Milan, in collaboration with Cesare Bernazzano, he made a painting depicting the “ Baptism of Christ ”. Another painting, " Salome with the head of John the Baptist ", was acquired by Emperor Rudolf II (1552–1612) and is now in the holdings of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna .

In 1517 he traveled to southern Italy again. In Messina he painted the " Adoration of the Magi ". Today the painting is in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples. In 1520 he returned to Milan, where " Madonna in Glory with the Saints " was created, originally intended as a winged altar for the Church of San Rocco. Now the factory is located in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan.

Cesare da Sesto died in Milan in 1523. The monumental monument of Leonardo da Vinci on the Piazza della Scala in Milan shows Cesare da Sesto, together with three other artists from the Leonardo school (Marco d'Oggiono, Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio and Andrea Salaino ).
