history
Excavations from 1972 suggest that the parish area was already settled from 300 BC. In Roman times there was a military river port in Marnate, and the Olona river was an important means of communication with Gaul. In 1972 archaeological discoveries were made in the area at the foot of the hill of Nizzolina Alta, suggesting the existence of a small cemetery from 300 BC. The village was first mentioned in 1072. In 1176 the wounded emperor Friedrich Barbarossa stopped at Marnate to receive first aid.
In 1630 the plague also struck Marnate; for this occasion the hospital was built in the middle of the valley.
