Somma Lombardo is a municipality in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .
geography
The municipality is located southwest of Varese on the Ticino and covers an area of 30 km² . The Case Nuove, Coarezza, Maddalena and Mezzana fractions belong to Somma Lombardo. The neighboring communities are Arsago Seprio , Cardano al Campo , Casorate Sempione , Castelletto sopra Ticino ( NO ), Ferno , Golasecca , Pombia (NO), Samarate , Varallo Pombia (NO), Vergiate and Vizzola Ticino .
The southern municipality includes part of the Milan-Malpensa airport .
history
Somma Lombardo was an important junction on the Roman consular road called Severiana Augusta , which connected Milan to Verbano via Sesto Calende . Remnants of Roman road pavement were found during excavations in Via Soragana in 1985 and 2002. South of Somma Lombardo, the Via Severiana Augusta crossed the Novara and Como through Castelseprio .

- Propsteikirche Sant'Agnese first mentioned in the 13th century, designed in 1604 by the architect Francesco Maria Richini and renovated between 1664 and 1697 by the architect Carlo Buzio; it keeps the Trittico di San Vito attributed to the school of Ambrogio Bergognone .

- Castello Visconti di San Vito was first mentioned in writing in 1251, notary Marcellino de Angleria (Angera). The old fortress took on the role of a fortified castle, which was chosen as the permanent residence of the Visconti family . In 1473, the differences of opinion between the Visconti brothers culminated in the split between the two owners. The older brother Francesco, from whom the Visconti di San Vito descended, was responsible for the renovated part of the castle and thus for the northern part of the village; Guido, from whom the Visconti di Modrone descended, was responsible for the oldest part of the castle and the lower part of Somma Lombardo. Every summer, the castle is the seat of the Medieval Festival that commemorates the victory of Bishop Ottone Visconti over the troops of Della Torre in the Battle of Desio , which took place on January 21, 1277 and thanks to which the Duchy of Milan was born.
- L'ipposidra or ferrovia delle barche is to the north of the road that connects Malpensa airport with Somma Lombardo ("Via Giuseppe Giusti"), the route of the boat railway or Ipposidra, built in 1858, runs a few hundred meters inside the moor The aim is for the boats to avoid the rapids that left the town of Tornavento from Lonate Pozzolo and arrived at Sesto Calende.
