history

Under Roman rule, Gallarate became part of the province of Gallia cisalpina . From Gallarate one passed the old consular road Via Severiana Augusta , which connected Milan with Verbano on Lake Maggiore . From an administrative point of view, the municipality was part of the Regio XI Transpadana . From Galleratum, its Latin name, the Gallaratesestraße, a Roman road that connected Novaria (modern Novara ) with Comum ( Como ), led to Sibrium ( Castelseprio ).

In 974 there was talk of a loco et fundo gallery . When Bishop Ottone Visconti destroyed Castelseprio in 1287, Gallarate became the seat of the captain and the deputy of Seprio when the Milanese took possession of the village in 1292. Gallarate took advantage of this and turned into a place with market rights. The city already had this vocation during the Sforza period. The old town was built in an elliptical shape to the left of the Arno River.

In the 16th to 18th centuries, Gallarate and the entire Duchy of Milan were under French and then Spanish rule. It became a feudal lordship and a county with the Grandat of Spain that was passed on to several noble families. It remained that way until the abolition of feudalism in 1797 (families: Bentivoglio, Caracciolo, Pallavicino, Altemps, Visconti and Castelbarco). Between 1786 and 1787 Gallarate was the capital of one of the provinces of Austrian Lombardy.

In December 1926, the fascist government decided to create the new province of Varese, and the Gallarate district, which also included municipalities with some demographic importance such as Busto Arsizio , Legnano , Saronno and Rho , was divided between the new province and the province of Milan .
