Cunardo is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality is located about 13.5 kilometers north-northwest of Varese on the Margorabbia , which flows into the Olona . It covers an area of ​​6.04  km² . The Camartino , Fornaci and Riano factions belong to Cunardo . The neighboring municipalities are Bedero Valcuvia , Cugliate-Fabiasco , Ferrera di Varese , Grantola , Masciago Primo and Valganna .

history

During the Lombard period, around 900 AD, a settlement was built on Monte Castelvecchio . Cunardo used to belong to the Valtravaglia fiefdom , which finally fell to Duke Filippo Maria Visconti of Milan in 1438 . In 1583 the Marliani family became rulers of the area.
