history

Above the Roman village, the parish church developed in the Middle Ages, whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction remained until 1583 and civil jurisdiction until 1784. Olgiate Olona was a religious and administrative point of reference throughout the Middle Ages, first in the Contado del Seprio and from 1395 in the Duchy of Milan . After the destruction of Castelseprio in 1287, during the fighting between the Visconti and Della Torre (Torriani) families , the people of Olgiate Olona became dependent for the criminal justice of Gallarate , where the seat of the captain of the Seprio was housed.

Air crash in 1959

On June 26, 1959, a Lockheed L-1649 Starliner of the TWA (N7313C) was probably struck by lightning about 15 minutes after taking off from Milan-Malpensa airport on the scheduled flight from Milan to Paris-Orly . Subsequently, at least two fuel tanks exploded; the machine crashed east of Olgiate Olona, in the municipality of the village. All of the 68 people on board listed on the flight plan died, as well as a small child who was presumably taken on board unannounced. At that time it was the most serious aircraft accident in Italy and the most serious aircraft accident in 1959. The accident was the first fatal incident involving a Lockheed Starliner (see also Trans-World Airlines flight 891 ) .
