Gorla Maggiore is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality covers an area of 5 km², is 10 km from the city of Busto Arsizio and is on the banks of the Olona river . The neighboring municipalities are Carbonate ( CO ), Fagnano Olona , Gorla Minore , Locate Varesino (CO), Mozzate (CO) and Solbiate Olona .

history

In Roman times, Gorla was located in the border area between the Municipio of Comum (now Como ) and Mediolanum ( Milan ), of which one can find land borders that slope down to the south, as well as an extensive forest area against which one can lean against the city limits, the remains of trees were clearly visible until the 19th century. The village was already inhabited between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, as evidenced by the discovery of a Traiano coin from the year 103. A new resumption of the settlement could be hypothetical with the advent of Diocletian in the 3rd century when Milan became the capital of the Western Roman Empire and all the surrounding areas saw the allocation of new settlers and soldiers.

After the Lombards conquered Milan in 569, the territory was redistributed, including Seprio , to which Gorla belonged. It was the institution of the arimannie , the patrimonial property of the crown, which was given to the fare (warrior groups) in exchange for a guard duty in usufruct .

With the conquest of Seprios by the Visconti family and the associated establishment of the Duchy of Milan (1395), Galeazzo Visconti published an advance on August 17, 1536, which concluded an agreement between Count Vitaliano Visconti-Borromeo and several men from the Gorlesian community the payment of a census on Martin's Day by this created.

Attractions

  • Parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in its current state dates back to 1850. Only the Romanesque bell tower (with the exception of the bell tower) has remained from the previous building.
  • Oratory Santi Vitale e Valeria: in 1580 a floor plan shows the shape of the church in its first phase. Overall, the church was expanded and changed several times in 1580, 1619 and 1900, which reflects the shape in which it is today.

  • San Carlo Church. After the plague of 1630, the bodies were reportedly buried in the church's basement, although there is no documentary evidence of this. It is very likely that the basement was used as a hospital during the cholera epidemic that broke out in 1854 and left 101 dead (one tenth of the population at the time). This was confirmed in 1927 when excavations were carried out to clean the basement in order to remove the continuous miasms that came from them. Various skeletons were found, some of them in strange positions, suggesting that elements affected by a serious illness were isolated in extreme cases.
