geography

The municipality is located about nine kilometers south-southwest of Varese and covers an area of 54  km² . The factions Albusciago , Caidate , Menzago and Quinzano belong to Sumirago . history

In 1786, after the new subdivision of Austrian Lombardy, Sumirago became part of the Province of Varese, but returned to the Province of Milan in 1791 . During the Napoleonic period (1809) the Sumirago parish was abolished and added to the nearby Caidate parish, but only two years later the Caidate parish was also abolished and added to the Albizzate parish.

All municipalities regained their autonomy after the establishment of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto in 1816, in which Sumirago continued to belong to the province of Milan.

In 1869 the previously independent municipalities of Albusciago , Caidate , Menzago and Quinzano became districts of the municipality of Sumirago.
