Angera is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality covers an area of ​​17  km² . The districts of Barzola and Capronno and the hamlets of Bruschera, Fornetto-Vigane, Lake Maggiore, Montecatini and Paludi belong to Angera. The neighboring municipalities are Arona (NO), Cadrezzate , Dormelletto (NO), Ispra , Meina (NO), Ranco , Sesto Calende and Taino (Lombardy) .

Attractions

Angera is known for its mighty Rocca di Angera castle , which dominates the area on a promontory. The oldest mention of this building dates back to around 1066. The Rocca di Angera, owned by the Borromeo family since 1449 , is open to the public except in winter. Notable frescoes are in the interior (courtroom).

In the center of Angera is the church of Santa Maria Assunta from the 15th century with frescoes from the 18th century. The Archaeological Museum, housed in a 15th century palace, houses finds from Roman times, when Angera was an important stop. A promenade, the Lungolago , and a marina stretches along the lake .
