Memorial stone in Meina

The present area of the city was already inhabited during the Bronze Age. The place is known for its magnificent villas from the 18th and 19th centuries. The palatial buildings, whose architectural styles range from Classicism to Art Nouveau , can best be viewed from the lake. Spacious parks surround the stately mansions. It is worth mentioning the Villa Faraggiana Ferrandi, which was built in 1885 in neoclassical style and houses the Botanical Museum.

In mid-September 1943 soldiers of the German Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler committed a mass murder in Meina of 16 Jews who had found refuge in the Meina Hotel from other European countries. This Meina massacre is probably the best-known single event of the first mass murders of Jews in Italy . A memorial stone in the Parco della Fratellanza at the entrance to the village (on the right side coming from Arona) commemorates this crime.
