José Néstor Pékerman Krimen (born September 3, 1949 in Villa Domínguez , Entre Ríos ) is a former Argentinian - Colombian soccer player of Ukrainian origin and former soccer coach of the Colombian national soccer team . From September 16, 2004 to June 30, 2006 he was the coach of the Argentine national soccer team . He had to end his playing career at the age of 28 due to a knee injury. He had previously played for Argentinos Juniors (1970–1974) and Independiente Medellín (1974–1977).

After retiring from his career, he did not become a coach straight away, but instead worked as a taxi driver during the 1978 World Cup .

From 1982 to 2004 he was responsible for the youth work of the Argentine Association in various positions. Under Pékerman as junior coach, Argentina was three times U-20 world champion in 1995, 1997 and 2001. After Marcelo Bielsa's resignation in late 2004, José Pékerman became national coach without ever having coached a first division club. His appointment was controversial. Maradona and the local press accused him of only being a "youth coach". Almost all Argentine national players are known to him from various youth teams.

Pékerman put the team back on the road to success in 2006 World Cup qualifiers . The Argentines already completed the opening game of the Confederations Cup 2005 against Tunisia in Cologne under him . With the claim to reach the final, he traveled with his team to the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the German team after a penalty shoot-out and then resigned on the same day. After a year without coaching, Pékerman took over from his compatriot Américo Gallego for the 2007/08 season as coach of the Mexican first division club Deportivo Toluca . From February 25, 2009 he was the coach of the Mexican first division club UANL Tigres .

He has been the coach of the Colombian national football team since January 6, 2012. He managed to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil and Russia. In Brazil, the Brazilian national team only stopped him in the quarter-finals. For the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he and Colombia qualified fourth in the South America qualification.
