Sergio Daniel "Checho" Batista (born November 9, 1962 in Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentine football player and current coach . As a player, he became world champion in 1986 .

Career

As a player

Batista played in his youth with the Argentinos Juniors , where he made his debut with the first team in 1981. With Argentinos he won the Metropolitano Nacional of the Argentine Primera División from 1984 to 1985 , as well as the 1985 Copa Libertadores .

In 1988 Batista moved to River Plate , where he won the championship title of the 1989/90 season with the team. Batista also played for Nuevo Chicago and the All Boys in Argentina and Tosu Futures in Japan.

As a member of the Argentine national soccer team , Batista won the 1986 World Cup . He was part of the starting line-up in all games and took on the role of a defensive midfielder in a 5-1-3-1 system, who on the one hand defended in front of the defensive line and on the other hand was involved in building up the game, thus staging Enrique, Burruchaga, Maradona and Valdano sat. Batista also took part in the 1990 World Cup. Here was a regular player only in the preliminary round. In the rest of the tournament he was only used in the extension of the semi-finals against Italy. Batista became vice world champion.

As a trainer

Batista began his coaching career with Uruguayan club CA Bella Vista in 2000. He had two contracts with Argentinos Juniors, one with Talleres de Córdoba and another with Nueva Chicago. Between 2005 and 2006 he was assistant to Óscar Ruggeri at CA San Lorenzo de Almagro .

In October 2007, the former midfielder was appointed head coach of the Argentina U-20 national team and replaced Hugo Tocalli. He also coached the Argentine Olympic team, which won the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics .

After Diego Maradona's contract was not renewed after the 2010 soccer World Cup , Batista was appointed interim coach on July 27, 2010. In this role he led Argentina to two wins (1-0 against Ireland and 4-1 over world champions Spain) and suffered a 0-1 defeat against Japan. Three months later, he was officially appointed head coach of the Argentina national team. In his first game in this capacity, his team beat Brazil 1-0 with a goal in the 90th minute from Lionel Messi . At the domestic Copa America 2011 , his team failed after poor performance in the group stage in the quarter-finals against eventual titleholders Uruguay . As a result, Batista was dismissed as national coach on July 25, 2011 or asked for his replacement himself.

On May 30, 2012, Batista signed a contract with Shanghai Shenhua . On July 4, 2013, he resigned from 13th place after 15 match days. In March 2014 he was again the coach of the now renamed club.
