Sergio Omar Almirón (born August 18, 1958 in Rosario ) is a former Argentine football player . In 1986 he was the soccer world champion in Mexico with the Argentina national soccer team . He is the father of Sergio Bernardo Almirón , who also became a football player and is currently under contract with Juventus Turin , but was most recently loaned out to various clubs.

Career

Club career

Sergio Omar Almirón played the first twelve years of his football career with his hometown club Newell's Old Boys from Rosario in east Argentina. His activities at the club from 1977 to 1989 were only interrupted by a one-year guest appearance in Europe at the French second division FC Tours , where he made 29 games in Division 2 and scored eight goals. Overall, however, his time in France was not very successful and he returned to Rosario after just a year. Here he played for the Newell's Old Boys for two more years and was Argentine champion in 1987/88. In the Primera División a first place was occupied with six points ahead of CA San Lorenzo de Almagro . With the championship title you were eligible to start at the Copa Libertadores in 1988 . There Almirón reached the final with the Newell's Old Boys, where they met the Uruguayan representative Nacional Montevideo , against whom they had already lost in the course of the tournament, but still got one round due to a bye. But also in the final they lost to Nacional Montevideo after the return leg. After winning the first final game at Estadio Gigante de Arroyito 1-0, coach José Yudica's team suffered a 3-0 defeat after extra time in the second leg in Montevideo , making Nacional Libertadores winners.

After 283 league games for Newell's Old Boys, Sergio Omar Almirón left the club in 1989. Then he had with the UANL Tigres in Mexico. There he played 73 games and scored 23 goals. From 1992 to 1993 he was under contract with Estudiantes de La Plata , but after only one year in La Plata he moved to CA Central Córdoba , where he played football for two more years. In 1994 Almirón completed three more league games for Talleres de Córdoba before ending his active career at the age of 36.

National team

Sergio Omar Almirón came in 1985 and 1986 to six appearances in the Argentine national football team . He got four goals. National coach Carlos Bilardo appointed Almirón to the Argentine squad for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico . However, he was not used in the tournament. Meanwhile, the Argentine team reached the World Cup the final, where the Aztec stadium of Mexico City to Germany met. Argentina won with goals from José Luis Brown , Jorge Valdano and Jorge Burruchaga as well as goals from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Rudi Völler for Germany 3-2 and became world champions for the second time since 1978 .
