Luis Alberto Islas Ranieri (born December 22, 1965 in Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentinian soccer player who took part in the soccer world championships in 1986 and 1994 with the national team of his home country and became soccer world champion in 1986.

Career

Club career

Luis Islas, born in 1965 in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires , began his football career in 1982 with the Chacarita Juniors . The 1969 champions were already playing in the second division at the time. During his time with the Chacarita Juniors, Estudiantes de La Plata became aware of the young goalkeeper after Islas had successfully represented Argentina at the Youth World Cup in 1983 and a second place was achieved. A crowd of 110,000 in the Aztec Stadium of Mexico City Islas won with his team until the final against Brazil . At Estudiantes he developed into a permanent member of the team of the later world champion coach Carlos Bilardo , who as a player himself had won the Copa Libertadores three times with Estudiantes . 1983 Islas won the Metropolitano competition with Estudiantes de La Plata by beating CA Independiente in the final . He moved to this club in 1986 after 107 games in the Primera División for Estudiantes. In two years Islas played 48 league games for Independiente, but did not win the title. After a short and unsuccessful trip to Europe to Atlético Madrid and the Spanish lower-class club CD Logroñés , he returned to Independiente in 1990, where he was in goal for the next four years and made another 141 games. After 1994 numerous positions followed for the goalkeeper, he played for the Newell's Old Boys and the Mexican clubs Toluca and Club León , among others . In 2003, at the age of 38, he returned to the goal of Independiente Avellaneda and played eight league games between the posts of the traditional club before retiring.

After the end of his active career as a soccer goalkeeper, Luis Islas also worked briefly as a coach. He coached the Club Almagro and Club Aurora teams in Bolivia in 2006 and 2007 .

National team

After his success with the Argentine juniors, Luis Islas completed his first international match in the senior division in 1984. Two years later he was in the squad of the Argentine national soccer team for the soccer World Cup in Mexico. With Nery Pumpido , however, another goalkeeper guarded the gate of the gauchos, so Islas was not used. Since the Argentine team was able to win the world championship title at the tournament, Islas still got world championship honors. After the world championship he played two South American championships , where he was not number 1 again. Shortly before the 1990 World Cup in Italy , he ended his national team career for the time being. Curiously, Pumpido injured himself in the second group game and Sergio Goycochea , who actually came as the third goalkeeper, played the rest of the World Cup, which Argentina finished second. After the World Cup in Italy, Alfio Basile became the new national coach for Argentina and Islas wanted to play for Argentina again. After winning the King Fahd Cup in 1992 , the first Confederations Cup , he was in the squad for the 1994 World Cup . Going into the tournament as number 1, his performances were anything but world championship, in four games he conceded six goals, almost consequently the end came in the round of 16. After the World Cup in the United States , his national team time finally ended after 30 international matches.
