Sergio Javier Goycochea (born October 17, 1963 in Buenos Aires ) is a sports journalist and a former Argentine soccer player .
He was the Argentine national goalkeeper at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Actually, he had only traveled to Italy as goalkeeper No. 2, but was preferred by coach Carlos Bilardo as a replacement after the injury of the regular goalkeeper Nery Pumpido and played an outstanding World Cup.
In general he was feared as a penalty killer by the opponents. Proof of this he took on the 1990 World Cup in the quarter-finals against Yugoslavia and in the semi-finals against Italy. Argentina only won both games on penalties, with Goycochea parrying two penalties each. In the 1990 World Cup final against Germany , however, he was unable to fend off the decisive penalty from Andreas Brehme , which led the Germans to the World Cup. The live commentary from Gerd Rubenbauer on German television, which has achieved cult status over the years, will be remembered :
“ Goycochea knew everything! He just couldn't hold it. "
His greatest success remains the vice world championship title in 1990. In addition to this success, he won the 1992 Confederations Cup with Argentina two years later.
Because of his not easy to pronounce Basque family name, Goycochea was only called "el Vasco", the Basque, by the fans of his home club River Plate .
After his career, he turned to sports journalism and is now a well-known TV presenter in Argentina.
