The Copa América 1993 was the 36th game of the South American continental championship in football and took place from June 15 to July 4 for the third time in Ecuador. From this tournament on there was a special feature. For the first time, two non-South American visiting teams, Mexico and the USA , took part in the tournament.
When it came to the competition mode, they returned to the system that had already been tried and tested in 1987 and that was to be retained for future competitions. The game was played in a combination of a group phase and a subsequent knockout round . The group stage was played in three groups, this time with four teams each. Another new feature was the quarter-finals, which were played for the first time and which the two best teams in each group and the two best third-placed teams reached. In the event of a tie, the goal difference decided. In the final round there was no extra time after 90 minutes if the score was tied, but instead a penalty shoot-out . Defending champion Argentina, like all other participants, had to compete in the group stage. This time, only a few games in groups A and B were played as part of double events on one day in the same stadium.
Argentina was able to defend its title undefeated and with its 14th title was again the sole record winner of the Copa America. By winning the Copa America, Argentina qualified as representative of South America for the 1995 King Fahd Cup , the forerunner of the FIFA Confederations Cup .
