The Copa América 1987 was the 33rd game of the South American continental championship in football and took place from June 27th to July 12th for the eighth time in Argentina.
Again there was a change in the delivery mode. They returned to the competition in one country, but did not play in the league system (everyone against everyone) as in the previous decades - most recently in 1967 - but in tournament form with a group phase and a subsequent knockout round . The group stage was made up of three groups with three participants each. The three group winners made it to the semi-finals, while defending champions Uruguay automatically qualified for the semi-finals.
Uruguay secured their thirteenth title and was the sole record winner of the Copa America ahead of Argentina.
