The Copa América 1995 was the 37th game of the South American continental championship in football and took place from July 5th to July 23rd for the seventh time in Uruguay. As in the last tournament in 1993 , two non-South American visiting teams took part. Again this was Mexico and the USA.
Nothing changed in terms of the competition mode. The game was played in a combination of a group phase and a subsequent knockout round . The group stage was played in three groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group and the two best third-placed teams reached the quarter-finals. For the first time, the 3-point rule also applied at the Copa America . In the event of a tie, the goal difference decided. In the final round there was no extra time after 90 minutes if the score was tied, but instead a penalty shoot-out . Defending champion Argentina had to start in the group stage as usual. In groups B and C, the games as well as two games of the quarter-finals were played in double events on one day in the same stadium.
Uruguay was able to celebrate its 14th title unbeaten at the Copa America, drawing level with record holder Argentina again. By winning the Copa America, Uruguay qualified for the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup as representative of South America .
