José Óscar Herrera , full name José Óscar Herrera Corominas , (born June 17, 1965 in Tala ) is a former Uruguayan football player .
Career
society
The 1.81 meter tall Herrera used as a defender played at club level from 1984 to 1989 for Peñarol , from whose youth teams he emerged and quickly secured a regular place. In 1985 and 1986 he was Uruguayan champion with the Aurinegros . He then won his most important title at club level with the Copa Libertadores in 1987 . In the three finals he was used from the start. He played a total of 13 games on the way to this international triumph. In the subsequent World Cup final, he also played, but lost with his teammates against FC Porto .
At the end of the 1980s he moved to Europe, where he initially joined the Spanish club Unió Esportiva Figueres . In the 1990s he played in Italy for Cagliari Calcio and Atalanta Bergamo . With Atalanta he was at the Coppa Italia 1995/96 in the finals, but lost with his club there against Fiorentina .
Towards the end of his career, he returned again in 1998 for a season at Club Atlético Peñarol. Another station with the Aurinegros is also mentioned for 2003 .
National team
Herrera was a member of the Uruguayan national soccer team . He made his debut in Celeste on August 7, 1988 as part of the Copa G. Jimenez de Quesada in a 0-0 draw against Colombia's national team. He played his 57th and last international match on April 30, 1997, when he played against Paraguay in the World Cup qualification. In the course of his international career he scored four goals. Herrera's career highlight in the national team was in addition to participating in the 1990 World Cup , in which he was used in the three group games, winning the Copa America in 1995 , in which he played all games with Uruguayan participation. In addition, he was also part of the squad at the 1989 Copa America , which Uruguay finished in second place. There, too, he ran up seven times. In addition to a total of 15 World Cup qualifiers for the tournaments in 1990 and 1994, he also took part and played in the 1988 Copa Boqueron , Copa Pinto Duran and Copa MUFP .
