The Copa América 1989 was the 34th game of the South American continental championship in football and took place from July 1 to July 16 for the fourth time in Brazil.

Again there was a change in the delivery mode. They returned to the organization of earlier decades in the league system (everyone against everyone), this time being divided into a preliminary round and a final round. The preliminary round was played in two groups of five teams each. The best two teams of each group reached the final round in which in a group again in a simple round everyone played against everyone. The group winner became the tournament winner. In the event of a tie, the goal difference decided. Defending champion Uruguay, like all other participants, had to compete in the preliminary round. For the first time in the history of the competition, all games in the context of double events were played on one day in the same stadium. In the last game of the final round between Brazil and Uruguay, the record at the Copa America, which is still valid today, was set with 170,000 spectators.

Host Brazil used their home advantage again and won the Copa America for the fourth time and for the first time since 1949 . Until then, Brazil could only win the title as host. It was only eight years later that Brazil won the Copa away for the first time in Bolivia.
