The Estádio do Arruda - also Arrudão , officially Estádio José do Rego Maciel - is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of Recife . It seats 60,044 spectators and is the home of the Santa Cruz FC club .
The Estádio do Arruda in the Arruda district of Recife , the capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco in the northeast of the country, was built in 1972. The official name Estádio José do Rego Maciel refers to José do Rego Maciel (1908-2006), a Brazilian politician who was Mayor of Recife from 1952 to 1955.
On July 4, 1972, the stadium's opening game took place, with Santa Cruz FC and CR Flamengo from Rio de Janeiro facing each other. The game ended goalless, so that the first goal in this stadium only fell in the second game by Betinho from Santa Cruz in their 1-0 victory in a friendly against the Brazilian national soccer team . At that time, the Santa Cruz FC club experienced its prime and regularly occupied places in the top third of the table in the Brazilian championship.
The record crowd at the Estádio do Arruda were 90,200 spectators who watched the qualifying game for the 1994 World Cup in the USA against Argentina , which Brazil won 2-0. After various modernizations, the capacity of the Arrudão is only 60,044 spectators.
