The Santa Cruz Futebol Clube is a Brazilian football club based in Recife, Pernambuco state . The association was founded on February 3, 1914. The club colors black, white and red resemble those of a coral cobra, so the team is also referred to as “coral”. The local rivals are Sport Recife and Náutico Capibaribe , with Sport leading the way in the track record.
history
Santa Cruz was a frequent participant in the national championship. In the heyday of the club, in the 1970s, considerable successes were achieved there with a fourth place in 1975 and a fifth place in 1978. But after the last relegation from the first division, the Série A , 2006, the team was passed through to the third division, the Série C, in the following year . In 2015, Santa Cruz celebrated promotion to the Série A. At the end of the season, the club had to relegate again. The 2017 season finished 18th in Série B and had to return to Série C.
European Footballer of the Year 1999 Rivaldo , the 1994 World Cup participant Ricardo Rocha and the German champion Aílton began their playing careers at Santa Cruz. 1973 put the club with Ramón , who scored 21 goals, the top scorer of the Brazilian championship . Pelé is said to have played his 1000th game against Santa Cruz in 1972.
Stadion
The club plays its home games at its own Estádio José do Rego Maciel , generally named after the district of Estádio do Arruda .
The stadium, which opened in 1972, now has a capacity of around 60,000 spectators. The record attendance was 96,990 people in 1994 on the occasion of a World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Bolivia, which the hosts won 6-0.
