The Criciúma Esporte Clube , usually just called Criciúma for short , is a football club from the city of Criciúma in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . The greatest success of the club, which, alongside Figueirense FC , Avaí FC and Joinville EC, is one of the four most important clubs in the state, is the victory in the Brazilian Cup competition of 1991.

history

The club traces its origins back to the Comerciário Esporte Clube , founded in 1947 , which was dissolved in the 1960s due to financial problems. The association was brought back to life in 1976 by some previous members of Comerciário, but in 1978 it was renamed Criciúma EC. The club received its colors, black and yellow, in 1984.

In the cup competition, the Tigers, trained by Luiz Felipe Scolari at the time , met the renowned club Grêmio Porto Alegre . In the first leg of the final in Porto Alegre , Vilmar took the lead after just 15 minutes, which Gremio was only able to equalize shortly before the end. In the second leg, a goalless draw was enough, as away goals count twice in the Brazilian Cup. This was also the first significant success of the later world champion coach.

The success justified the so far only participation in the Copa Libertadores , where Criciúma was group winners in 1992 in the first round in front of São Paulo FC and two Bolivian representatives. In the quarter-finals, the black and yellow met again on São Paulo and were eliminated after results of 0: 1 and 1: 1 against the eventual winner.

Since then, the club has had a rather changeable fate. In 2005, the decline took place in the third-rate Série C . The club has since returned to the second division for two years, but rose again in 2008. After returning to Série B in 2011, the club surprisingly qualified second for Série A in the 2012 season. Currently, however, the club is back in the Série B.

Stadion

Criciúma plays its home games at the 1955-built, even Majestoso mentioned Estádio Heriberto sleeve of which has 28,749 spectators. It is named after a former governor of Santa Catarina who donated the floodlights.

The stadium was expanded from 15,000 to 25,000 after winning the Cup in 1991 to meet the guidelines for matches in the Copa Libertadores. Record attendance was 31,123 spectators on August 6, 1995 in a game against Chapecoense , which Criciúma won 1-0 and thus secured the national championship of that year.
