The Estádio Heriberto Hülse is a football stadium in the Bairro Comerciário in the Brazilian city of Criciúma , in the state of Santa Catarina . It has space for 28,749 spectators and serves as the home of the Criciúma EC association .

history

The Estádio Heriberto Hülse was completed and opened in 1955. On October 18, 1955, the two regional clubs, and Imbituba met for a friendly game that ended with a 1-0 win for Imbituba. The Imbituba player Valdo scored the first goal in the new stadium with the winning goal. Since 1955, the Estádio Heriberto Hülse has served the Criciúma EC soccer club as a venue for home games, although its predecessor club, the Comerciário that was involved in the opening game, played here. In 1976 Comerciário was finally dissolved and the association was re-established under the name Criciúma EC . With the renaming began successful years for football in Criciúma.

Under coaching legend Luiz Felipe Scolari , the then second division team won the Brazilian soccer cup in 1991. At Estadio Heribert Hülse, Socalari's team achieved a goalless draw in the second leg against Gremio Porto Alegre after they had scored 1-1 in the first leg at the Estádio Olímpico Monumental in Porto Alegre and thus had the away goals rule on their side. To this day, the cup victory in 1991 represents the greatest success in the club's history of Criciúma EC. This also allowed them to participate in the 1992 Copa Libertadores . The only participation of the association in this competition to date was quite successful. They finished first in the group stage and defeated Sporting Cristal from Peru in the round of 16 . Only in the quarter-finals did they lose against the eventual winner, São Paulo FC . In the following years, however, the club could not build on the success of the early nineties and rose in 2005 even in the third-rate Série C from. After returning to the second division, Criciúma established himself there and managed to return to the Série A in 2012 . Série B is currently playing again .

The Estádio Heriberto Hülse currently has a capacity of 28,749 spectators. This capacity was achieved through renovation work in the wake of the 1991 cup victory, which was only 15,000 spectators ago, due to participation in the Copa Libertadores . The record crowd in the stadium was set up on May 20, 1992 when Criciúma beat São Paulo FC in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. The venue takes its name from Heriberto Hülse, who was governor of the state of Santa Catarina from 1958 to 1960 and during whose reign the state-financed construction of floodlight masts in the stadium of Criciúma fell.
