Criciúma is a city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . In 2011 it had about 194,000 inhabitants. It is located in the south of the state in the Sul Catarinense mesoregion .

The city is located about 24 km west of the coast of the Atlantic Ocean , 180 km south of Florianópolis , the capital of the state, and about 900 km south of São Paulo . The Rio Sangão flows through the western urban areas.

The seat of the diocese of Criciúma is located in Criciúma . The episcopal church is the São José Cathedral .

history

Criciúma was founded in 1860 by Italian emigrants mainly from the Veneto .

economy

Criciúma is a center of coal production, which is why the metropolitan region is also called Região Metropolitana Carbonífera . It is also an important industrial center, where mainly products for interior construction (e.g. tiles and floor coverings) are manufactured.
