Mesoregion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under mesoregions , Portuguese mesorregião , in the plural mesorregiões , refers to the geostatistical subdivision Brazilian states . From 1989 to 2017 there were 137 mesoregions.

They were formed by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE) for statistical and planning purposes and therefore did not form an administrative area as an independent regional authority. These mesoregions were further subdivided into 558 microregions , which included several adjacent municipalities ( municípios ). They were an implementation of Article 25, § 3 °, of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988 . Similar elements such as land and population structures, economic and labor market conditions, which were combined into larger regions, were decisive.

After around 28 years of practical experience, the IBGE has made new structures and streamlines with new names: Regiões Geográficas Intermediárias , indirect geographical regions that will replace the mesoregions from 2017.
