Kebri Dehar (also Kebridehar , K'ebri Dehar , Qebri Dehar , Kabri Dahar , Kabridahar , Qabridahare , Khebre Dahar , Qebri Deharre , Gabredarre , Kabri Dar , Ge'ez ቀብሪ ደሃር) is a city in the Korahe zone of the Somali region in Ethiopia . It is the capital of the woreda Kebri Dehar of the same name and is located on the Fafen River .

According to the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia for 2005, Kebri Dehar had 36,191 inhabitants. In 1997, of 24,263 inhabitants, 89.02% were Somali , 2.58% Amharen , 0.96% Oromo and 0.54% Gurage , 6.9% belonged to other ethnic groups. As a result of the drought , farmers and ranchers from surrounding areas are moving to Kebri Dehar.

history

In 1948, Ethiopian district governors were sent to Kebri Dehar, Kalafo and Warder . This was the first time that the east of the Ogaden region was administered by Ethiopia.

In the Ogaden War , Kebri Dehar was captured by Somali troops in late July 1977 . The Ninth Brigade of the Ethiopian Army, which had put up bitter resistance, withdrew to Harar . On March 8, 1978, Ethiopian troops retook the place.

Since 2007 the conflict between the separatist Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and the Ethiopian army has intensified in the Somali region , the Korahe zone is one of the affected areas. According to Human Rights Watch , prisoners were tortured and women were raped by soldiers in the Kebri Dehar military base.

Infrastructure

Kebri Dehar has the most important market in the Korahe zone. In addition to local livestock and food, imported goods such as clothing and household appliances are imported via Boosaaso and food from Burao , and to a lesser extent there are also links with Mogadishu and Hargeysa . The city has telephone connections and electricity for about six hours a day. There is a public hospital, which is poorly equipped, and a military hospital, which is reserved for the army. The schools in Kebri Dehar were built at the time of Haile Selassie and are considered dilapidated. Kebri Dehar is located on the road from Degehabur to Gode , another road connects the place with Shilabo . The place also has an airport with a gravel runway. In 2007 the Ethiopian Roads Authority began building paved roads to Shekosh and Danan .
