Shekosh (also Sheygosh , Sheygoosh , Shikosh , Sheikosh , Shek Hosh ) is a place in the Korahe zone of the Somali region in Ethiopia . It is the capital of the woreda shekosh of the same name .
According to the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia for 2005, Shekosh had 5,658 inhabitants. In 1997, 99.55% of the 3,792 inhabitants were Somali , the remaining 17 inhabitants were Amharen , Gurage and Oromo .
Shekosh is affected by the conflict between the separatist Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and the Ethiopian army. In 1997 an army vehicle was destroyed by a land mine nearby. The army then abducted the local Ugas (traditional leader) and mayor Mohamed Muhumed Fatulle and his nephew to the military base in Kebri Dehar , the two of whom were later found dead. The conflict in the Somali region has intensified since 2007. According to Human Rights Watch , prisoners were tortured at the Shekosh military base.
Shekosh has a market. In 2007, the Ethiopian Roads Authority began building a paved road from Kebri Dehar to Shekosh. The asphalt road connection to Degehabur is 97.2% complete.
